Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987, June 26 has been chosen as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The day is supposed to serve as a reminder of the goals agreed to by UN Member States of creating an international society free of drug abuse.
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) will this year celebrate ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ by focusing on the spiritual aspect of fighting drug abuse and trafficking.
According to the NCB officer in charge of the event, "The approach will this year be more spiritual. This is because we hope to instill public confidence that Islam can actually repel all challenges and negative influences. The approach will also show that Islam can bring peace of mind to those faced with daily stress, and that they don’t have to turn to drugs.”
“We are inviting all communities and residents in the country to pray and seek blessings from Allah so that Brunei can be spared from the threat of drug misuse, which if left uncontrolled, can result in a huge disaster,” he said.
“The UN-picked theme this year is ‘Global Action for Healthy Communities Without Drugs,’ and it aims to strengthen the vital role played by communities in the fight against drugs.”
Brunei’s own theme for the celebration is “Spiritual Strength in Rejecting Drugs.”
"In previous years, the bureau have chosen themes based on drug abuse treatment or others. This year we look into something deeper. With this theme, the bureau hope to educate the community to turn to the religion to repel negative elements. A spiritually weak person is easily influences, looking for shortcut solutions and easily gives up, therefore, they can easily be influenced to take to drugs."
The Brunei celebration will start June 25 at Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah with mass Maghrib and Isyak prayers, recital of surah yaasiin and prayers for the country to be free from drugs.
Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Dato Paduka Hj Abd Wahab bin Juned will be the guest of honour.
Muhammad Asyraf Mohamad Ridzuan, the winner of the Iman Muda Session One, Astro Oasis, will deliver a special talk based on the theme of the celebration. This will be the highlight of the event.
Muhammad Asyraf will also hold talk in other districts. On June 26, he will speak at Dewan Bumiputra in Temburong at 9.30am, the next day he will be at the Belait District Community Hall at 9.30am, and at 2pm on the same day, he will speak at Mahad Islam Hall in Tutong.
All are invited to attend the free talk, and the topics will be different in each district.
NCB hopes that Muhammad Asyraf’s popularity will draw the interest of the younger generation to join in the celebration.
