Assalamu’alaikum brothers and sisters, it’s been a really long while since I’ve actually written anything substantive in this blog. Most of the action on social media takes place these days on the “instant gratification” media like instagram, facebook, twitter, snapchat etc. This is evident from my blog stats which have been dwindling over the past few years.

Despite that, I still believe blogs have a relevance (aside from being an advertorial channel) in allowing me to express deeper thoughts and ideas or even expressing my emotions and feelings.

Anyway, I just thought I’d do a bit of year end reflection and jot down some of the things that are bouncing around in my head.

At the same time, BIBD is keen to partner with local institutions to create alliances to improve access and create more opportunities for the ease of doing business in Brunei Darussalam, while improving the infrastructure for a faster and more secure digital economy. Its first alliance came earlier in the year by powering Progresif Pay, Progresif’s digital payment solution.

Head of Retail Banking, Hjh Nurul Akmar Hj Md Jaafar demonstrating BIBD Quickpay to the media. The feature will be made available to BIBD mobile users in the new year.

As the demand for ease of payments from customers and merchants increase as a reflection of Brunei Darussalam’s smart society with among the highest social media penetration and mobile phone penetration, BIBD will always be on the lookout for digital innovations to complement its suite of digital payment solutions. Not far from the horizon, BIBD will be introducing the latest version of its BIBD NEXGEN Mobile app which will include its latest payment convenience: the BIBD NEXGEN Wallet.

BIBD, leading this digital initiative will be open to other wallet and payment solutions such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, and would gauge our further investments within this based on the public’s adoption to the cashless economy and smart nation initiative.

Paying made easy by BIBD NEXGEN Wallet

A first for Brunei Darussalam, the BIBD NEXGEN Wallet will allow BIBD customers to perform NFC (Near Field Communication) payments using their NFC supported android devices at merchants via the BIBD NEXGEN Mobile application.

This latest technological addition creates a fast and secure alternative to cash payments as the supporting technology and security makes payments seamless, with the added benefit of allowing payments to be made offline (without access to the internet). This can be used at any contactless-enabled terminal at more than thirty million merchants worldwide.

The importance of digital technologies in tourism, providing opportunities for innovation and preparing the sector for the future of work, is at the centre of World Tourism Day 2018, to be celebrated in Budapest, Hungary (27 September 2018).

World Tourism Day, celebrated every 27 September around the world, is a unique opportunity to raise awareness on tourism’s actual and potential contribution to sustainable development.

This year’s World Tourism Day (WTD) will help to put the opportunities provided to tourism, by technological advances including big data, artificial intelligence and digital platforms, on the map of sustainable development. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) sees digital advances and innovation as part of the solution to the challenge of marrying continued growth with a more sustainable and responsible tourism sector.

“Harnessing innovation and digital advances provides tourism with opportunities to improve inclusiveness, local community empowerment and efficient resource management, amongst other objectives within the wider sustainable development agenda”, said UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.

The WTD official celebration will be held in Budapest, Hungary, a country enjoying steady growth of tourism backed by consistent policy support and a commitment to the digital future. Other celebrations will take place worldwide.

The official celebration will also see the announcement of the semi-finalists of the 1st UNWTO Tourism Startup Competition, launched by UNWTO and Globalia to give visibility to startups with innovative ideas capable of revolutionizing the way we travel and enjoy tourism.

On Thursday 20 September 2018, the British High Commissioner hosted a farewell reception for Mr Abdul Azim Bin Haji Abd Kassim who has been awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship for the 2018–2019 and will be pursuing his postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom next month. The farewell event was held at the Residence of the British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam.

Mr Azim Kassim, a Research Officer in the Directorate of Defence Policy at the Ministry of Defence, will be pursuing a MA in Security, Terrorism and Insurgency at The University of Leeds, in the United Kingdom.

Mr Azim Kassim said, “No words can truly describe how much the Chevening Scholarship means to me. This is a great honour and one in which I acknowledge is far from an individual effort.

This award would not have been possible without the lessons learned from my respected mentors and colleagues; both from when I was a reporter at a local newspaper, and now with the Ministry of Defence.”

Mr Azim Kassim explained, “The University was chosen based on its excellent student satisfaction levels in which it was named the Sunday Times University of the Year in 2017. It also ranked in the Top 10 Universities in the UK, according to The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018 and in the Top 100 of the QS World University Rankings for 2019.

The course was selected because it will enhance my understanding on national, regional and global security threats. My hope is that this course will be of relevance to my role and responsibilities at the Ministry of Defence particularly to contribute towards providing reliable and holistic policy analysis to benefit my organisation and my country.

Upon my return, I will do my best to ensure that my learning and knowledge is shared, and to continue to strengthen the defence relations between Brunei Darussalam and the United Kingdom. This scholarship is also a contribution towards Vision 2035 in its pillar of achieving a highly skilled workforce.

The British High Commissioner H.E. Richard Lindsay, said: “It is a great pleasure to be able to present the 2018-19 Chevening Scholarship to Azim Kassim. This competitive scholarship is given to individuals who have proven that they have the potential to be future leaders. Azim will be one of over 2000 Chevening Scholars who receive this award for a fully-funded year of postgraduate study in the UK each year. He will also be joining a global alumni network of over 50,000 Chevening Scholars. In this country, the Brunei Chevening Youth Forum is a very active alumni group which is dedicated to sharing their expertise and discussing how to meet some of the biggest challenges facing the country. In due course, I am confident that Azim will use his experiences to make a very significant contribution back into Brunei. Many congratulations to him, and to his very supportive family and colleagues”

Mr Azim was welcomed into the Chevening family by the President of the Brunei Chevening Alumni Association YB Khairunnisa, who was a Chevening scholar herself in 2016-17, together with other alumni members. (picture attached).

The High Commissioner said that applications for the 2019/20 Chevening Scholarships were currently open to citizens and permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam. The ideal candidate would be in early to mid career, with at least 2 years’ work experience and an excellent record of achievement with evidence of leadership qualities. Applicants should be committed to returning to contribute to Brunei’s social and economic development by using the skills and knowledge acquired in the UK.

All those interested in applying for the 2019/2020 Chevening scholarship should visit www.chevening.org/Brunei where potential applicants can find information on how to apply, register interest to receive alerts about their application and candidate guidance, as well as to see the priority subjects for Chevening Scholarships. The deadline for applications is 6 November 2018.

Tucked away near the corner shop lot of Block J, the place is a lot bigger than I expected. I was greeted by the owner who proceeded to explain the various services that they offer. He said most of his staff are from Thailand and so the massages mostly have a Thai flavour to them, which means there will be some degree of bending and cracking involved. I’m not a big fan of that so I picked the head, neck, and shoulder massage since it sounds least likely to involve aforementioned manoeuvres heheh…

Turned out to be a good choice. The massage was really good and focused on the “stress zones” of the head, neck, and shoulders. At the end of the massage, I felt relaxed and ready for the weekend 🙂

If you’d like to give Kang Comfortzone a try, do give them a call on 2455981. Here’s a guide to the services offered and a useful map to the shop.

Financial fitness can be defined as having enough money to meet one’s needs when it’s needed, including in an emergency. This would mean living within one’s means, with manageable debt and to have savings. But is this enough? What about owning a home, children’s education and retirement funds? The list can become long but it is achievable, with proper financial planning.

Being financially fit requires a careful exercise in financial planning – understanding one’s cash flow, defining one’s objectives and goals, going through budgeting, and knowing how much to save as well as to invest. Just like starting on a physical fitness programme, the starting process for financial planning can be quite stressful and overwhelming.

To help relieve the stress of achieving financial fitness, the public can approach a personal financial planner to get a free professional financial consultation at Baiduri Bank. They can drop by any Baiduri Bank branch or set up an appointment at Baiduri Bank Wealth Management Centre by calling 226 8363 or 226 8359.

To empower customers to take this first step towards achieving financial fitness, Baiduri Bank has launched the “Stay Financially Fit” campaign. From 3 August to 31 October 2018, customers who successfully sign up for selected insurance plans offered by Baiduri Bank are treated to special welcome gifts.

By signing up to a selected insurance plan with a monthly premium of BND100 and above, Baiduri Bank is rewarding successful customers with a choice of either an SMA heart rate monitor and activity tracker band or BND50 worth of shopping vouchers from Zalora.
