On Saturday October 18, 2014 and Sunday October 19, 2014 athletes from Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, China and Indonesia will gather at the Multipurpose Hall of the National Stadium for Battle Royale, hosted by GETFIT CrossFit.

Brunei’s first CrossFit affiliate, GETFIT CrossFit, will be hosting 80 athletes from over 10 CrossFit affiliates at Battle Royale 2014. Battle Royale is GETFIT CrossFit’s annual competition based on CrossFit movements. Much like the CrossFit Asia Regionals, their aim is to provide a platform for local crossfitters, athletes and fitness enthusiasts to challenge and test themselves through competition. The competition will start at 8:00am until 5:00pm on both days.

BR Color Logo

GETFIT CrossFit are also extremely proud to introduce the new logo for Battle Royale. The logo consists of two ancient weapons; a “Kelasak” and two “Kampilan”. “These weapons are proudly held by officers of the Royal Regalia of our beloved Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. Both are symbols of perfection of our country’s customs and tradition which date back to before the 7th century. We have always been inspired by our culture to strive to beat the odds whatever they may be, and this logo reminds us that every athlete had to start from somewhere,” said Coach Sekhon, Head Coach, GETFIT CrossFit.

GETFIT CrossFit has been working around the clock preparing for this weekend’s event. “I am most looking forward to seeing the athletes in action!” said Coach Sekhon. When asked why the general public should come and spectate, he replied: “There is a lot of hidden talent in Brunei. You would be surprised to know what they are capable of! People are always going outside of the country to compete in fitness events. This is one where regional athletes are coming over to Brunei (some for the first time) to compete with us.”

“We are proud to host Battle Royale for all, and we will do our best to put on an amazing show for the general public. Also, the Brunei Calisthenics Group will be showcasing their talents in a demo on Sunday October 19, 2014 at 12:30pm. They are incredible in what they can do on a pull up bar!”

A number of local CrossFit athletes were interviewed about Battle Royale and what they were looking forward to:

“The challenge and fun,” Nizam Bakar, graduate development trainee; “Meeting my CrossFit friends and challenging each other,” Noi Harun, quantity surveyor;

“The competition – against others and myself,” Delwin Keasberry, commercial manager;

“Meeting new and old friends from Brunei and beyond, and to challenging my fitness,” Boon Chu Woo, medical scientist;

“To another excellent event; where people can showcase their abilities and fitness. Also, to see how far they have come from the event in 2013. It should be great for both competitors and spectators alike,” Mas Idris, IT executive director;

“Competition is tough this year. I am looking forward to give my best, and most importantly to enjoy every moment of it,” Amalina Abdullah, crossfitter.

On Monday 15 September 2014, the British High Commission hosted a farewell reception for Siti Nurfateha Abdullah who has been awarded a prestigious Chevening Scholarship for the 2014–2015 session and will be pursuing her postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom this month. The farewell event was held at the Residence of the British High Commissioner to Brunei.

Siti Nurfateha Abdullah will be pursuing a Masters in Anthropology of Development and Rights at Goldsmiths, University of London. Employed as a Research Officer in the Prime Minister’s Office, Nurfateha selected Goldsmiths as its Anthropology Department is voted among the best in the UK.

Nurfateha, who is also the co-founder of the non-profit organisation Bruneians:Read and webzine Songket Alliance, said

“Goldsmiths’ Anthropology Department takes a critical view of developed countries’ approach to development. Therefore, discussions and classes will be stimulating as it does not view any one philosophy as absolute, but also takes into consideration societal differences.

Goldsmiths advocates an ethnographic approach to learning about society and basic human rights like education, women’s and children issues, and healthcare. This approach is useful to keep in mind as I will be able to apply what I’ll be learning to Brunei without forgetting its policies, culture and philosophy.

Having previously taken my Bachelor’s Degree at the National University of Singapore, going to the UK will be my first direct exposure to the British education system.

Being awarded the Chevening scholarship was unexpected. I’ve looked up to and been in awe of some of the previous Brunei recipients of the scholarship, so I’m honoured to be a part of that line-up. I’m really looking forward to networking with scholars from other countries’ too! I hope to come back to Brunei bursting with ideas for my work at the Prime Minister’s Office and projects I’m a part of.”

Thirty years of scholarships around the world have created an influential global network of more than 43,000 Chevening alumni in over 150 countries.”

The ideal candidate would be in early to mid career, with at least 2 years’ work experience and an excellent record of achievements which show evidence of leadership qualities. Have a very French affair right here in Brunei! From the magnificent tourist destinations, unforgettable gastronomic experience to France’s industrial leadership, the French Embassy in Brunei Darussalam invites you to experience a taste of what France has to offer.

“The exhibition, which will take place at Times Square Mall on April 5th, is an initiative of the French Embassy, aiming at showcasing some of the main aspects of France’s economic and cultural presence in Brunei Darussalam. First of all, the aim is to show the interest of French groups in the Sultanate and the potential it offers for the reinforcement of bilateral business, as well as the trust they place in the vibrant future of Brunei Darussalam. The Exhibition also aims at developing a better awareness of the general public about what France has to offer.” – His Excellency Jean Yves Berthault, Ambassador of France in Brunei Darussalam.

Videos will display the marvelous landscape and cultural heritage of France, with the scope of encouraging tourism (Air France will offer two airplane tickets for the lucky draw).

Students will be informed of possibilities of studying in France, the third global destination for foreign students (Campus France, based in Singapore).

France would like to encourage the development of cooperation in vocational studies, in order to respond to the VISION 2035 of the Sultanate, as well as to its determination in favouring economic diversification. The first cooperation of this kind, which will start its activities next month, will be shown with Institut de Soudure (welding) having demos, and explaining to potential students the benefits of such careers.

Language study will occupy its due place, with the participation of Alliance Francaise.

A large French group are supporting the event, Peugeot which won the prized “car of the year award” for 2014, will showcase its latest model and Michelin will display its up to date technologies.

Schneider Electric, the recognized world leader in electricity, automation management and energy efficiency will showcase its most innovative SMART CITIES concept in the event.

Total of course which represents France’s most significant investment in the country and will even develop further in the years to come, will also be present at the event.

The French Brunei Business Association (FBBA) will once more have an occasion to demonstrate its dynamism.

We should not forget that if there is one thing that France and Brunei have in common, it’s their dedication to “food culture”. There will be demonstrations of French cuisine for the pleasure and interest of the public. Everything HALAL of course!

Come and Join us on the 5th of April 2014 at Times Square Mall for this very special event and get the chance to win exciting prizes that include two airplane tickets for a TRIP to Paris courtesy of Air France, which will also give special promotional fares to all the visitors from Brunei to Paris.

Royal Brunei Airline’s eight-year wait for its new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners ended with unbridled glamour and celebration in a grand ceremony last night which saw key stakeholders launching Royal Brunei’s first of five planned aircraft in a hangar just off the Brunei International Airport.

YB Minister of Communications jointly launched the aircraft with RB Deputy Chairman Dermot Mannion before naming the aircraft in a “Bunga Rampai” ceremony.

Brunei’s national carrier made history by being the first airline in Southeast Asia to operate the Dreamliner, touted as an aircraft providing an unrivalled passenger experience while breaking technological ground with environmental-friendly features and efficient operations.

Dubbed by RB the Betterfly, Boeing‘s long-haul aircraft is said to produce 20 per cent less emissions with lower fuel consumption, allowing it to fly farther while reducing its carbon footprint. Perhaps more importantly for a small commercial airline like RB, the Dreamliner is built to please the traveller.

YB Pehin Dato Haji Abdullah toured the Dreamliner’s interior, accompanied by Mannion and Boeing Senior Vice President for Asia Pacific and India Dr Dinesh A Keskar, testing out the purported comfort of seats and facilities in business and economy class.

The visibly delighted minister told The Brunei Times that the plane was “refreshingly different”.

“The safety requirement is up to the Civil Aviation to ensure through various standards. But for the passenger, they are more interested in the comfort level and certainly it is magnificent,” the minister said.

Having already secured a long-term B787 engineering partnership with Air France/KLM to support itsDreamliner operations worldwide, the tone for RB’s ambitions is decidedly set. And with maiden flights scheduled to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur later this week, as well as the launch on December 1 of same time daily Dreamliner services to London Heathrow via Dubai, RB can finally dare to dream.
