The Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS) of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is working hand-in-hand with the Society for the Management of Autism-Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) to organise a charity musical performance on September 22nd and 23rd.

The show, entitled “Looking Through the Autism Wonderland”, is the 5th concert produced by SMARTER and is set to be held at the International Convention Centre, Berakas. The main cast comprises SMARTER children and youths with autism in an exciting adaptation of the classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The collaboration between IHS and SMARTER is the first of its kind and is a project conceived by Team ALICE (Appreciating the Lives of Individuals With Autism and Celebrating their Excellence), a group of 3rd year medical students, as part of a community outreach Special Study Module. It aims to enhance autism awareness in the Sultanate as well as to generate funds of up to $100,000 for the continuity of SMARTER.

The same group of students has so far succeeded in raising nearly $1,700 from donations and garage sales in a bid to fund the upcoming theatre event.

“We are confident that the SMARTER children will deliver a tour de force that will move the people in the audience. They have been working hard and are excited to give their best performance, so we encourage everyone to attend the event.” – Wardatul Ramzuna, one of the students behind Team ALICE.

“Members of the public are invited to see the feature show on Saturday, 22nd September at 7PM. For this event, we made the initiative to go paperless ticket by implementing e-ticketing system, sold at: $35, $45, $65, and $80. Please visit the website or simply contact +673 7141411 or visit our official Instagram page @autismwonderland for further information and update.” – Khairuddin Khalid, another member of Team ALICE.

The Sunday, 23rd September matinee at 2PM is exclusively for Year 10 and Lower Sixth Form students from selected schools.

The project is supported by numerous local companies such as Standard Chartered, BIBD, Mashhor Group of Companies, Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd, Dotroot Technologies, Othman and Associates Consulting Engineers, Thomson Furniture, Printmartz Advertising.

Financial fitness can be defined as having enough money to meet one’s needs when it’s needed, including in an emergency. This would mean living within one’s means, with manageable debt and to have savings. But is this enough? What about owning a home, children’s education and retirement funds? The list can become long but it is achievable, with proper financial planning.

Being financially fit requires a careful exercise in financial planning – understanding one’s cash flow, defining one’s objectives and goals, going through budgeting, and knowing how much to save as well as to invest. Just like starting on a physical fitness programme, the starting process for financial planning can be quite stressful and overwhelming.

To help relieve the stress of achieving financial fitness, the public can approach a personal financial planner to get a free professional financial consultation at Baiduri Bank. They can drop by any Baiduri Bank branch or set up an appointment at Baiduri Bank Wealth Management Centre by calling 226 8363 or 226 8359.

To empower customers to take this first step towards achieving financial fitness, Baiduri Bank has launched the “Stay Financially Fit” campaign. From 3 August to 31 October 2018, customers who successfully sign up for selected insurance plans offered by Baiduri Bank are treated to special welcome gifts.

By signing up to a selected insurance plan with a monthly premium of BND100 and above, Baiduri Bank is rewarding successful customers with a choice of either an SMA heart rate monitor and activity tracker band or BND50 worth of shopping vouchers from Zalora.

Full details and terms and conditions of the promotion can be found on www.baiduri.com. For more information on other products and services offered by the Bank, please call the 24-hour Baiduri Bank Customer Helpline at 244 9666.

The prestigious Chevening Scholarship Award for study in academic year 2014/2015, funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), is currently open for applications from Brunei. Citizens and Permanent Residents of Brunei Darussalam are invited to apply, in order to pursue a one-year taught Masters qualification in the UK.

British High Commissioner, H.E David Campbell said: “With 15th November the closing date for this year’s applications, we hope qualified Bruneians will apply for this unique scholarship award to further their studies and careers. Many thousands of people, from all around the world, have found this to be a life changing experience.”

Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the FCO and partner organisations. The programme provides a unique opportunity for leaders of the future to build a global network of continuing professional significance and also to establish social, cultural, academic or commercial partnerships with the UK.

Chevening scholarships focus on a broad range of fields and disciplines, in line with the socio-economic development of Brunei, particularly (but not limited to): Islamic Finance; Contemporary Islamic Studies; Defence and Security; Civil Society and Human Rights; Community Development; Sports Development/Management and Energy, Environment and Sustainability.

The ideal candidate would be in their early to mid career, with at least 2 years’ work experience and an excellent record of achievements which showed evidence of leadership qualities. Applicants should be committed to returning and contributing to Brunei’s social and economic development by utilising skills and knowledge acquired in the UK.

The FCO makes the final decision on applications for Chevening Scholarships. Candidates are assessed on academic merit; referees’ letters; proposed area of study and future career – in line with FCO priority areas; leadership potential and potential to further strengthen the UK-Brunei bilateral relationship.

To date, 43 Bruneians have been awarded the Chevening Scholarship, many of whom have gone on to secure high level jobs in the public and private sector and are active members of the Chevening Alumni.

Siti Nurfateha Abdullah, recipient of the 2014/2015 Chevening Scholarship who is currently studying for a Master’s in Anthropology of Development and Rights at Goldsmiths, University of London said, “I would like to thank the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for giving me the opportunity to learn more about myself and the world through a unique lens. To anyone thinking of furthering their Masters and have a knack for networking with people you can talk about serious issues with: Apply! I have only been here for five weeks and it has been the most eye-opening and fulfilling five weeks I have ever gone through.”

Siti Nurfateha added, “The second you are a Chevening scholar, you are automatically a part of a vast network of unique individuals. Through social media, I quickly made friends with people who have a strong interest in social justice and gender issues. We chatted over things we plan to do, places we have to go, and resources available to us in London before we even received our plane ticket to the city. When the time came to meet them, being friends with other Chevening scholars felt almost natural, like I’ve known them for a really long time or that I’ve found people I can talk issues I have always been concerned with easily. It doesn’t matter how old you are, what gender you identify with or what your beliefs are—being a Chevening scholar means being under an umbrella where the general consensus is to make the world a better place, whether you are an activist, a policy maker, poet, engineer, or doctor.”

Maria Grace Koh, 21, better known as her stage name ‘Eia’ is one of Brunei’s singer-songwriters and is best known for her catchy honest, heartfelt, fun and edgy original works reflected in a spectrum of genres such as Pop, Soul, R&B and a little bit of Funk.

You may know her as an ex-national swimmer who was selected to represent Brunei at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but due to some unfortunate events, the team did not proceed.

This was how she discovered her ability to song-write – where she wrote her first song at 15, “Hello World” (available on iTunes).

She has most recently come back from WCOPA, Hollywood representing Team Brunei where she bagged 4 Gold & Division Champion Awards for all of her original songs, as well as 1 Silver and 1 Bronze.

She then went on to record her original songs with Marc ‘M. Doc’ Williams (Madonna, Kelly Rowland, Jordin Sparks, K-Ci & Jojo) and C-Ray (EMI Music Publishing, K_Ci & Jojo) of Indasoul Records.

Eia worked closely with the team at Indasoul Records for the release of her new Single, “That’s The Way” and has plans to record the rest of her songs with the team with the hope of releasing a full album in the near future.

“That’s The Way” will be available on Saturday, 25th October 2014 on iTunes under ‘Eia’ – join us as we support our local artists and be in for a treat with this new, hip and infectious track by Eia!
