TCY Motors Sdn Bhd, the sole dealer and distributor of Audi cars in Brunei, held its inaugural three-day Audi Urban Driving Experience at the ‘Pusing Lagi’ car park in Jerudong, yesterday.

The event was an exclusive one where Audi Brunei had invited its customers as well as members of the media to be a part of the Audi driving experience, which was a road and ‘track’ based safety driving tutorial as well as vehicle product demonstration.

DCIM100GOPRO

The day was divided into two sessions and each session comprised three exercises, which were the Road Drive, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Braking and Gymkhana/ Slalom.

The event aims to further educate Audi owners on the capabilities of their cars that they might have not known of as well as give drivers an in-depth knowledge on the German auto.

The day began with the registration of participants and a general briefing by Audi driving instructor Nicolaas Smit from South Africa and Richard Sorensen from Audi Singapore. The first exercise was the Road Drive that featured the Audi A3 in its various specifications. Drivers drove in a convoy led by Audi Brunei’s staff and during this, they got a chance to experience the array of driving mode that the new A3 offers. The function called ‘Driver Select’ has five different mode, which were Auto, Dynamic, Comfort, Efficiency and Individual. The second exercise was the exciting ABS Braking where the hands-on experience taught drivers on how to react in emergency maneuvers. Drivers had to accelerate to a speed of about 60km/h and slam on the brakes to test the braking system in the Audi A4 Avant and A5 Coupe and observe the safety features that it carries when in the situation.

3-2014-09-27 09.19.36

The last and fun exercise was the Gymkhana/Slalom circuit. Drivers drove the Audi A6 and A7 where they went through a series of curves and corners in a small ‘race’ with one another. This exercise practiced safe high speed handling and helps demonstrate the traction grip abilities of Audi’s trademark Quattro four-wheel drive system as compared to that of a vehicle without the Quattro system.

The overall experience of the Audi Urban Driving Experience was one to remember TCY Motors intends to hold it annually to highlight the capabilities of Audi vehicles and as a treat for its loyal customers.

At the end of each sessions, the participants were given certificates and Audi merchandises to show their appreciation to all those that attended the event. Both Smit and Sorensen presented the certificates the participants. Also present at the event were TCY Motors Managing Director Teng Chee Khiong and TCY Motors General Manager Sridheevan Sivanantham.

ROYAL Brunei Airlines (RB) yesterday unveiled new “heritage-inspired” uniforms for its cabin crew, as the latest phase of the national carrier’s re-branding programme.

The uniforms incorporated songket patterns for the female crew and Malay-style shirts for the males, among other features that reflected the re-branding programme’s aim “to share the unique culture of Brunei with the world”.

“Our re-designed uniforms reflect tradition, while evoking a modern simplicity,” said RB Deputy Chairman Dermot Mannion in his speech during the unveiling ceremony yesterday at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

Mannion said that the new uniforms were in line with this year’s national day theme “Generation with a Vision” and were part of the company’s contribution in promoting Brunei.

A RB statement said that new blouses for the female crew have been “tastefully detailed” with traditional songket patterns along the hem, trim and back. Colours will range from “coral dust to morning sky to fresh mint, based on the seniority of the crew”.

“This warm spectrum of colours has been designed to reflect the friendly and welcoming nature of the new RB brand,” the statement said. Matching traditional headscarves and flowing chestnut brown skirts completed the updated ensemble.

Male crew members will be wearing three-piece suits in matching brown, with a similar spectrum of Malay-inspired shirts and traditional standing collars.

Minister of Communications Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, RB’s Chairman Dato Paduka Hj Bahrin Hj Abdullah, members of RB’s Board of Directors, senior officials from the Ministry of Communications and Brunei’s Department of Civil Aviation were present to view the new uniforms during yesterday’s unveiling.

“RB is very proud that most of this project has been developed, implemented and completed in Brunei. Much of the design work was completed internally to ensure the new ensemble reflects Bruneian tradition,” the statement said.
The fabrics were selected and tailored by Brunei-based Khazanah Lady House, with matching shoes from BATA Brunei.

Passengers will get their first onboard sight of the new uniform in early April, to coincide with the launch of Boeing Dreamliner services to Melbourne.

In the meantime, citizens and visitors to Brunei will get a sneak preview this Sunday, when a number of RB cabin crew members will wear the new uniform in the parade during the 30th National Day celebrations. – Sally Piri

Royal Brunei Airline’s eight-year wait for its new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners ended with unbridled glamour and celebration in a grand ceremony last night which saw key stakeholders launching Royal Brunei’s first of five planned aircraft in a hangar just off the Brunei International Airport.

48-IMG_8077

YB Minister of Communications jointly launched the aircraft with RB Deputy Chairman Dermot Mannion before naming the aircraft in a “Bunga Rampai” ceremony.

52-IMG_8121

Brunei’s national carrier made history by being the first airline in Southeast Asia to operate the Dreamliner, touted as an aircraft providing an unrivalled passenger experience while breaking technological ground with environmental-friendly features and efficient operations.

Dubbed by RB the Betterfly, Boeing‘s long-haul aircraft is said to produce 20 per cent less emissions with lower fuel consumption, allowing it to fly farther while reducing its carbon footprint. Perhaps more importantly for a small commercial airline like RB, the Dreamliner is built to please the traveller.

YB Pehin Dato Haji Abdullah toured the Dreamliner’s interior, accompanied by Mannion and Boeing Senior Vice President for Asia Pacific and India Dr Dinesh A Keskar, testing out the purported comfort of seats and facilities in business and economy class.

The visibly delighted minister told The Brunei Times that the plane was “refreshingly different”.

“The safety requirement is up to the Civil Aviation to ensure through various standards. But for the passenger, they are more interested in the comfort level and certainly it is magnificent,” the minister said.

Having already secured a long-term B787 engineering partnership with Air France/KLM to support itsDreamliner operations worldwide, the tone for RB’s ambitions is decidedly set. And with maiden flights scheduled to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur later this week, as well as the launch on December 1 of same time daily Dreamliner services to London Heathrow via Dubai, RB can finally dare to dream.

BANK Islam Brunei Darussalam Berhad (BIBD) yesterday launched a new banking experience and the rebranding of its corporate image which incorporates unique Bruneian values that signifies the Sultanate’s sovereignty and Islamic canvas.

His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Deputy Sultan officiated at the launching ceremony which took place at the bank’s Kiulap Branch at Setia Kenangan Complex.

The introduction of the new brand “Bruneian At Heart” is one of the strategic efforts embarked upon under the bank’s transformation journey.

The emphasis of “Bruneian At Heart” brings out BIBD’s commitment to Bruneian aspirations and values, as well as its roots in Brunei and Islamic values.

The branch features a more refreshed ambience, a service focus and an enhanced banking experience.

“Because we are Bruneian at heart, you know the service that we provide to everyone not only over here but once we are actually international, is going to be very much the core of our philosophy,” said the bank’s managing director Javed Ahmad.

Speaking at a press conference held following the launching ceremony, he underlined the significance of the new brand for BIBD which is a fusion of four key unique Bruneian elements; the golden dome, the crescent room, the waterways of Brunei and the two hands in supplication which reflects the warm and intuitive relations that the bank has with Bruneians, and its values to the heritage of the nation.

The renovations associated with the rebranding will be applied to all other BIBD branches at least “within a year”, according to Consulus, the bank’s rebranding project consultant.

In an interview with The Brunei Times on Tuesday, the CEO of the Singapore-based company, Lawrence Chong said that BIBD now carries a “strong sense of Bruneian identity”.

According to him, the company “had to pay a lot of attention” to principles such as the Wawasan 2035 and the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) concept in order to stay true to BIBD’s identity as a Bruneianbank.

“The bank has a uniquely Bruneian design with a sense of modernity but not forgetting other values such as the family,” he said.

“Eventually this concept will be applied to the other branches. For now, the branches will go through a facelift for the logo.”

While BIBD’s transformation in terms of marketing, design and concept was orchestrated by Consulus, areas such as service and back office training are being done by other consultants.

Upon his arrival, His Royal Highness was greeted by Minister of Industry and Primary Resources cum Chairman of the Board of Directors for BIBD, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato SeriSetia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar.

After launching the new banking experience, the Deputy Sultan toured the refurbished branch before ending his programme.

Also attending the event were cabinet ministers, senior government officials, patrons and partners as well as local stakeholders.

NBT (Brunei) Sdn Bhd’s festive “2013 Year Of The Snake” display was lit up in full glory last night, marking the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations.

NBT Managing Director Ninan Chacko said that the display is a way for NBT to show gratitude to the Bruneian people for their loyalty and support, helping to make NBT the country’s number one automotive distributor for 31 consecutive years.

Chacko said the display was also set up to wish the Chinese community a very happy and prosperous Chinese new year 2013. “We are very pleased to join the Chinese community to usher in the very auspicious “Year of the Snake 2013″ by livening up and enhancing the festive atmosphere during the upcoming CNY celebrations.”

01-DSC_5246

The theme for the year is “Good Fortune, Health & Wealth With The Coming Of Spring”, which, as Chacko explained, is symbolised by the many auspicious festive sayings and wishes, as well as the large numbers of gold coins and ingots peppered across the sprawling display, signifying prosperity for all.

Over the years, NBT’s elaborate displays have become a fixture of the festive seasons a place where locals and tourists alike can soak in the joyous atmosphere and take pictures that will serve as sweet memories for many years to come.

NBT welcomes members of the public to come along to the official lighting up of the display tonight, reminding everyone to bring their cameraphones, tablets and cameras.

10-DSC_5273

Due to safety concerns, visitors to the display are no longer allowed to climb to the upper platforms. However, the lower platform is still accessible for photography purposes.

Chacko emphasised, “As much as we would like to give visitors more picture-taking opportunities, concern for public safety has to prevail. We therefore seek everyone’s understanding and cooperation in this important matter.”

In line with NBT’s corporate green philosophy and to comply with their international ISO14001 Environment Management System Standards certification, the lights will be switched off at 11pm daily and at midnight on the eve of public holidays, to conserve energy usage.

Approximately 90 booths are set up for the carnival; among the features and activities present are food stalls, a reptile house, a treasure hunt, “ION’s Got Talent” contest, mini games and many more.

The carnival officially began yesterday with the recitation of a doa selamat, followed by an opening speech from the Acting Principal of the Business School, Hj Abd Ishak Hj Idris. In his speech, Hj Abd Ishak said, “It is hoped that the Business Project will open the minds of students to dive into the business world and see it as a field that should be explored.”

Present at the event as the guest of honour and also to launch the carnival was the Director of the Technical Education Department, Hj Mohd Sharifuddin Hj Mohd Salleh.

The SP Carnival 2013 is organised by Year Two students of the BDTVEC National Diploma in Business and Finance and BDTVEC National Diploma in Secretarial Studies, under the guidance and supervision of the tutors from the school.

A total of 14 groups from Year Two (final year) students, 41 groups from Year One Diploma students, and 10 groups from both Skill Certificate 2 and 3 programmes are participating in the carnival. The organising committee also invited six local entrepreneurs from the Kampung Rimba Consultative Council to be a part of the carnival.

The main objective of the project is to give the students exposure and real experience in the business world, exposing them to multiple aspects of running a business marketing, finance, operations and management. It also aims to develop the students’ knowledge and ability on managing a real business on a small scale.

“We had a good experience organising this event. We’ve had our ups and downs but it is worth it,” said President of the SP Carnival 2013, Pg Md Hassanal Pg Md Jaffri.

“I hope that everyone gains the proper knowledge and experience through the project.”
