BIBD yesterday strengthened its collaboration with key government ministries in efforts to support Brunei Darussalam’s Wawasan 2035 to develop well- educated and highly-skilled individuals with a Temburong educational trip to schools in Sekolah Rendah Selapon, Sekolah Rendah Selangan and Sekolah Arab Temburong.

The existing collaborations are focused to accomplish the national strategy to prepare Brunei’s youth for an increasingly competitive and knowledge-based future. BIBD also took the opportunity to present educational materials to all three schools to supplement the development of their education.

The BIBD travelling party, which included senior management personnel, members of its Corporate Social Responsibility team along with BIBD ALAF volunteers, also extended their visit by engaging the local community to identify other opportunities for improvement to support the development and educational needs of its community.

The visit is also part of BIBD’s effort to further strengthen its relationships with students from the BIBD ALAF Programme, another key collaboration with the Bruneian government, specifically the education arms of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA). Concurrently, the BIBD party also took time to visit BIBD ALAF programme students, their families at their homes along with engagements with ALAF teachers from MoE and MoRa. This holistic approach allows BIBD to ensure the educational progress of ALAF students.

Hj Mohammad Yusri bin Hj Wahsalfelah, BIBD Head of Government Relations and Special Projects, commented, “It is essential that we support the development of education for our youth as future leaders to create a robust economy towards a sustainable society. This direct engagement approach allows us to better understand their living conditions and extend the right support. “On behalf of BIBD, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners from the public and private sector on our continued collaborations to further fortify the future of Brunei Darussalam”.

About The ALAF Programme

The BIBD ALAF (Advocating Life-Long Learning for An Aspiring Future) programme currently supports the development of more than one hundred and seventy students. The programme is kept sustainable by collaborated efforts from both public and private efforts which include BIBD’s own charity expeditions for ALAF, generous contributions from corporate agencies as well as members of the general public.

How can the public support the ALAF Programme

Members of the public wishing to contribute into the BIBD ALAF Programme fund may do so with a minimum donation of B$1.01 into the BIBD ALAF account at 1018181811 via BIBD channels such as the BIBD Online website, BIBD Mobile app, BIBD ATM and CDMs, and BIBD branch counters. The public can also set up a BIBD Standing Instruction to ensure a monthly donation into the ALAF fund. As an added option, BIBD account holders can also use their accumulated BIBD Hadiah Points for cash conversion into contributions into the ALAF fund account.

BIBD through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, today visited the residents of the blazen longhouse of Kampung Sumbiling Baru in Temburong District that left most families without any basic necessities.

The CSR team led by Hjh Sharmirawati Hj Azamain assembled in the earlymorning and began their journey towards the Temburong District to deliver the donation, food hampers and clothings, that were gathered through the combined efforts and resources of generous BIBD employees.

“Alhamdulillah, with this contribution, to some extent, can help ease the expenses of the affected families, especially in preparation for the approaching holy month of Ramadan” said Hjh Nurul Akmar binti Haji Mohd Jaafar, Head of BIBD’s Corporate Social Responsibility. She also added, “This can only be achieved with the concerted efforts and a sense of caring of CSR team and BIBD employee as a whole, which we are very proud of”.

A member of the CSR team express sympathy and sadness looking at the charred site of the homes and amazed on the patience shown by the affected families. She was however thankful to be able to make the trip and to personally handed over the donations to some of the families.

BIBD CSR has always been sensitive and concern to the needs of the less fortunate and will do its best to extend their assistance in any forms, should such an opportunity arise, which further underscore BIBD being Bruneian at Heart.

This internal charity initiative is also in line with the BIBD CSR objective in creating awareness and developing individuals who are socially responsible according to the faith that we embrace.

Starting and finishing at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, it began with a warm up session conducted by GetFitCrossFit before participants set off on their expedition.

Around 350 cyclists enjoyed their ride in the 53km cycling expedition led by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, as well as the Chairman of BIBD, an avid cyclist himself.

Participating and supporting the charity run were HRH Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah, HRH Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah and YAM Pengiran Muda Abdul Mu’min as well as Cabinet Ministers, deputy ministers, permanent secretaries and other senior officials from the government as well as private sectors.

The 21km half-marathon was flagged-off by guest of honour Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Education, also a key partner of the BIBD ALAF Programme.

The half-marathon run posed a serious challenge yesterday even to experienced runners. Also participating in the half-marathon was Haji Noorishanuddin bin Haji Noor Kaseh, a special needs individual who despite being wheelchair-bound was determined to complete the run.

Later, the second flag-off was held for the 10km runners as soon as the horn was sounded by Hjh Noraini binti Haji Sulaiman, BIBD’s Chief Financial Officer. The start of the 10km run saw 1,000 participants taking part and it served as an event to identify emerging talents that can be nurtured for the future.

As for the 5km and 2.5km Fun Run, Ak Hafiy Tajuddin Pg Rositi and Maziah Mahusin, Brunei’s young Olympians, were invited to flag-off the categories respectively. These categories saw 3,300 runners taking part.

Those who chose not to participate in the run also enjoyed the carnival with many stalls selling a wide variety of food and beverages as well as offering fun games and other entertainment.

A run for the education of underprivileged children in Brunei was held yesterday at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, which was one of the biggest charity runs in Brunei this year. Charity runs in Brunei have had amazing responses and yesterday’s event saw more than 5,000 participants in BIBD’s fundraising event of the year, the Charity Expedition for Advocating Life-Long Learning for an Aspiring Future (CE-ALAF) programme.

The inaugural charity expedition aimed to provide opportunities for the participants to play a major part in helping underprivileged children to stay in school. Running and cycling enthusiasts of all ages came together for a single cause, raising money for charity.

The ALAF Programme, which was initiated by BIBD CSR, aimed to provide opportunities for educational progression to underprivileged students. The charity expedition, which carried the tagline "One Step, One Pedal, One Education" hoped to inspire people to perform good deeds for the community.
