Forty-seven students from schools under the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs received lifelong learning assistance contributed by Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, BIBD through the BIBD Advocating Life-Long Learning for an Aspiring Future, ALAF Programme.

The presentation of the learning assistance was officiated by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy. The function is the sixth of its kind since the BIBD ALAF programme was launched in 2013. The total number of students who have received assistance under the BIBD ALAF programme up to January 2019 is 215.

The programme’s objective is to support the students’ learning to make them future leaders through a comprehensive financial assistance. It is also a strong manifestation of the care and attention given by Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam as well as its strategic partners, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Religious Affairs for life-long learning, in line with wawasan Brunei 2035.

Also present was Datin Seri Paduka Doctor Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohamad Salleh, Acting Minister of Education.

Eight cardholders were shortlisted and after a final draw today, three lucky winners namely, Wong Mei Hua, Gan Sin Siong and Chung Yee Wuen each won an unforgettable trip for two to Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore. BIBD today strengthened its efforts to support the development and educational needs of its community with contributions to the Orang Kaya Pemancha Berandai Primary School in Mukim Labi.

The visit is also part of BIBD’s effort to further strengthen its relationships with students from the BIBD ALAF Programme as well as the teachers who continuously support their education.

BIBD took the opportunity to also hand over books to add to the school library, an air conditioning unit to provide comfort to the students, and prizes to fifteen students who excelled in their education. The BIBD party also took time to visit BIBD ALAF programme students in Labi.

Hj Mohammad Yusri bin Hj Wahsalfelah, BIBD Head of Government Relations and Special Projects, commented, “Education is an essential part of the development of a robust economy towards a sustainable society. Therefore, we cannot underestimate the impact it can bring, but equally important is the environment in which our future leaders are brought up in.

“Alhamdulillah, we are able to contribute towards this cause with reaching out to the students of Labi, and also our own ALAF programme students to improve their learning conditions, while also taking the opportunity to thank the schools and teachers who continue to ensure the students’ future success.”

With just 1 day to go, the organisers and partners of the 23rd edition of the Baiduri Masters are busy at work putting together the final touches for the tournament.

RBA Golf Club crewmembers have been working through the night grooming the golf course to provide an optimum playing surface which includes grass trimming to remove any excess, green rolling to ensure a smooth putting surface and repairing any signs of turf stress and disease.

The event partner and sponsor of two hole-in-one prizes a Mini Cooper S Countryman and a BMW 740Li, QAF Auto Sdn Bhd, as a show of support towards the Baiduri Masters, have also put in the work to decorate their cars with official Baiduri Masters livery.

Sivakumar Krishnan, General Manager for QAF Auto Sdn Bhd, said in a statement, “We have been the sponsor for the Baiduri Masters for well over a decade and as the official event partner for the Baiduri Masters, QAF Auto is proud to be the premium automobile partners for the hole-in-one cars these past few years. The Ministry of Development through the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (DEPR) held a press conference this morning to socialize the addition of Thursday to the No Plastic Bag Weekend Initiative’ towards No Plastic Bag Everyday.

Present at the session was the Acting Permanent Secretary (Administration and Finance), Dr Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak, who addressed members of the media with regards to the extension. In her speech, Dr Nor Imtihan shared that the launching ceremony will be held on Thursday, 19th April 2018 in conjunction with Earth Day 2018, which appropriately carries the theme “End Plastic Pollution”.

The Acting Permanent Secretary also shared that the remaining days will be added in phases with Wednesday tentatively to be included in July 2018, Tuesday in October 2018 and Monday to be added in December 2018 towards realizing the Government’s objective of No Plastic Bag Everyday by 2019.  The initiative will initially involve stores and businesses that are currently listed under the No Plastic Bag Weekend initiative but will be extended to other consumers of plastic bags such as retails shops (kedai-kedai runcit), restaurants and markets/stalls (gerai-gerai).

The No Plastic Bag Weekend initiative was initially launched on 26th March 2011 to include Saturday and Sunday, with Friday being added on 17th February 2012. The objective of the initiative is to promote the concept of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in order to minimize the volume of waste sent to the country’s landfill. To date, fifty stores and businesses have voluntarily registered to participate in the initiative.

TELEKOM Brunei Berhad (TelBru) earlier this week further strengthened its foundation for Local Business Development (LBD) growth within its scope of services reflecting in the company’s vendor policy that aims to see more Bruneian engagement within the country’s field of telecommunications.

In a series of signing ceremonies that took place over the course of two days at the company’s headquarters in the capital, TelBru formally inked agreements with several identified local contractors responsible for phone and broadband connections.

Signing on behalf of the company was David Holliday, CEO of TelBru, who expressed his appreciation for the cooperation rendered by these contractors, emphasizing that these partnerships are important for the customers who expect professional services. He also highlighted that teamwork will be necessary to ensure Bruneians countrywide reap the benefits of TelBru’s services.

The agreements stipulate priorities for local recruitment within their respective organisations under Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) specified by the company as part of their contractual requirement.

The measures are to ensure that TelBru continues its intensive programme to bring high speed fibre broadband to citizens and businesses in Brunei. This move aims to assure that those contracted by the company provides equal employment opportunities to qualified Bruneians regardless of rank or designation as part of TelBru’s responsibility towards the development of not just human resource but also local communities throughout the country.

The development and growth of these local contractors are further supported by continuous training that will be provided by TelBru throughout the year as further assurance that they are provided with the skills to guarantee success in their partnership with TelBru as well as shortening the connectivity waiting time for TelBru’s customers.

Of the total number of contractors, eight were initially serving as sub-contractors and the decision to elevate their classification is to guarantee that they, too, are given equal access to TelBru related projects.

This consideration places these smaller companies on equal footing with their counterparts, further strengthened by uniform contractor rates predetermined by TelBru set in place to generate healthy competition.

By standardizing these rates, the contractors will need to hone in on their service delivery to better ensure that quality remains consistent should they wish to remain part of the company’s connectivity expansion as TelBru continues its rollout of fibre connectivity nationwide. The contract will run for the next 12 months with the possibility of two yearly renewals if they are able to adhere to the company’s requirements.

At the end of the first year, Brunei can expect more local faces equipped with suitable training and knowledge to service broadband connectivity.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has today, 27th February 2018, recognised Iqbal Damit, of Brunei as the 19th Commonwealth Point of Light in honour of his work mobilising Bruneian contributions for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

In the lead-up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London on 19-20 April, Her Majesty The Queen – as Head of the Commonwealth – is thanking inspirational volunteers across the 52 Commonwealth nations for the difference they are making in their communities and beyond.

By sharing these stories of service, the Heads of Government meeting will celebrate inspirational acts of volunteering across the Commonwealth and help inspire others to make their own contribution to tackling some of the greatest social challenges of our time.

Iqbal Damit is the founder of ‘Hand4handbn,’ an organisation providing Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh with food and donations. After raising over $15,000 for the organisation, Iqbal bought over 1,000 food packs and travelled to Balukhali refugee camp to distribute this food and other essential items. He distributed these packs, as well as thousands of items donated by other charities, to Rohingya refugees across the region, winning a National Youth Award in 2016 for his volunteer work.

Each Commonwealth Point of Light will receive a personalised certificate signed by Her Majesty The Queen as Head of the Commonwealth. The award for Iqbal Damit will be presented on 27th February by Richard Lindsay, British High Commissioner in Brunei.

Iqbal Damit said: “I am honoured and extremely humbled to be accepting this award. To be honest, I never saw this coming. What started off as something that I like to do, that is to travel and to help people, to then be given an award and recognition by Her Majesty The Queen and the selection team for something that I really enjoy doing gives me great honour. I would like to dedicate this award to the people that I have given assistance to. This is because they are the ones who have helped me instead. They have helped me to appreciate what I have and also be thankful with what I have. Until today, the assistance and aid that I have delivered in all my projects and charity work have taught me and reminded me daily to appreciate life better and to see beyond my own shoes and learn to walk in theirs.”

Richard Lindsay, UK High Commissioner in Brunei said: “On behalf of the Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, I am delighted to present Iqbal Damit with a Commonwealth Point of Light Award, in recognition of his service in providing humanitarian relief for Rohingya refugees. Through his work, Iqbal has demonstrated great compassion for fellow Muslims, and is a great role model for other young people across the Commonwealth.

There will be 52 Commonwealth Points of Light awarded – one from each nation in the Commonwealth. Iqbal is already an inspiration to others in Brunei, and will now inspire others across the whole of the Commonwealth.”

The Commonwealth is a diverse community of 52 nations that work together to promote prosperity, democracy and peace. The Heads of Government meeting will bring together leaders from all the 52 Member countries to reaffirm common values, address shared global challenges and agree how to work to create a better future for all citizens, especially young people. Voluntary service is a vital part of this agenda, which is why Her Majesty The Queen has chosen to recognise outstanding volunteers across the Commonwealth in this special way.
