Hey folks! Today I’d like to feature a local startup which provides “context-based coaching” geared specially for youth who would like to overcome their fear of public speaking and also increase their employability through the creation of CV’s and presentations that stand out. The man behind this venture is Edwin Lim, a former colleague and a good friend of mine. I managed to sit down with him amid his busy schedule to find out more about Soapboxer Company.

Hi Ed, tell me a bit about yourself. Your journey up to this point.

My career has been an interesting and adventurous one. Graduated with a Master’s degree in Software Engineering, my career began as a software developer for Royal Brunei Airlines, to becoming one of 3 RBA’s first Flight Simulator engineer and subsequently become RBA’s first Bruneian Project Leader.

After RBA, I became the Connectivity Delivery Lead for Ministry of Finance’s TAFIS Project under Accenture, becoming the first Bruneian Unit Lead for Accenture Brunei.

I went on to be an Assistant Chief Executive for E-Government Technical Authority Body (EGTAB), a technical think-tank for His Majesty’s e-Government initiatives.

My last professional career was with TelBru where I project managed MoF’s e-Payment Gateway and program managed TelBru’s FTTH initiatives. My last post with TelBru was General Manager for Access Network Department.

Having accumulated over 20 years of experiences as an IT consultant, running several large scale projects and heading technical operations, I felt it’s time to change my career direction from Services Delivery to Providing Services … I chose to become a Coach! I created SOAPBOXER COMPANY.

Why the name Soapboxer?

Soapboxer came from Soapbox – a platform for public speaking whereby someone literally stands on a box as their stage giving a speech to audiences who both agree and disagree with their views. At the end of the 19th and beginning of 20th centuries, these were common sights and practices which often resulted in a scuffle.

Hence, my flagship program SOAPBOX that coaches those with speech anxiety overcome their fear of public speaking. Soapbox’s mantra “A Soapboxer is one who has overcome their fear of public speaking”.

Why the switch to training and motivational consultancy?

I have two wonderful children who were very introverted to a point of being painfully shy. To ready them for their future and for the unforgiving business world, I need my children to stand out and have an edge. Having good grades are simply not enough – you are one of many. IQ alone just does not cut it anymore. Personally, I weigh in heavy on EQ. I have hired and seen individual with high EQ outperform those with high IQ.

Being vocal, heard and seen are the edge that I believe they desperately need. Not long after the birth of my eldest child, I felt I need to do something to make these happened. Over the course of my career, I was fortunate to see  the challenges, gaps and expectations in today workforce. So I started to develop my own coaching program for my children. They have come a long way. No longer afraid of speaking in public but still much we can work on to improve (like effectiveness). Next, I took my program and implemented it at work. The results were awesome and encouraging. It dawned on me that there are many more I can help and benefit from my program.

After TelBru, I realised it was time to put a name and brand on my program hence SOAPBOX was born.

Calling all Motoring Enthusiasts! A NEW quarterly publication was revealed yesterday in the capital, Motoring BN. Published by CONFEX, it is the latest quarterly magazine in Brunei and the first Bruneian lifestyle publication to revolve around the world of motoring.

Speaking to the media at a press conference yesterday, Izam Said, Editor at CONFEX, said that ‘Brunei’s No.1 Motoring Lifestyle Magazine’ focuses on the latest trends and news for cars and motorcycles from a local perspective. “We are gearing up to be one of the largest print magazines to be sold in Brunei, with a high investment in print, allowing us to expand our reach and circulation,” he said.

During the press conference he explained that the magazine will have 15,000 copies every quarter with a number of magazines already pre-sold to various stakeholders and government agencies, the remainder of which will be sold to the public.

“The magazine will feature a mix of both local writers and foreign correspondents that will give its readers the latest information and details on cars that are either in Brunei Darussalam or on their way here,” he said. “And if we feel the vehicles should be in Brunei we will make sure the public knows about it too. We want our readers to be well informed about what is happening regarding all things automotive.”

Who & What is it?

Motoring BN is Brunei’s No.1 Motoring lifestyle magazine. We are a team that focuses on bringing you the latest news about cars and motorcycles relevant to Brunei Darussalam along with the trends associated to them. Our new magazine offers a unique experience. We give our definitive view on the cars and motorcycles thanks to a mixed team of local correspondents and foreign correspondents. We will give you the low down on the wheels and deals in Brunei for Brunei, while keeping an eye on the breakthroughs taking place in the motoring world.

Where and Why?

As journalists one of the many things that we hear from Bruneians interested in buying new cars or bikes was that they never look the same as those featured online or in the magazines. So that’s what we felt we needed to address. Not only do we give an honest assessment on the myriad of vehicles we are privileged to test, we will also educate the road users here in Brunei about what’s available and on offer from the various car makers, so that they can exercise their decision and choice in a way that they previously haven’t been able to do so.

How?

From the start, Motoring BN is aiming to be one of the largest magazines in Brunei with a high investment in print circulation, while other global car publications are reducing theirs. This resonates the healthy demand and popularity of the motoring industry in Brunei. We are also one of the largest in terms of coverage; offering in-depth reviews of products in the motoring industry, both motorcycles and cars, opinions on the motoring world, safety tips, maintenance, lifestyle, food and travel stories.

We are also aware that our partners in the motoring industry have various promotions that run throughout the year and to stay up-to-date, readers of Motoring BN can stay tuned through Motoring BN Online. This will be the second phase as part of Motoring BN’s brand development. Here we will have latest events and happenings, car promotions, in tandem with our social media presence on Facebook and Instagram.

When it is available and how to purchase?

The magazine will be available in July, we will announce this through our social media sites so ‘like us’ or ‘follow us’ to stay tuned and be the first to purchase a copy!

A number of copies have already been pre-sold so reserve your copy fast! At the time of launching, this can be done through CONFEX hotlines or our website. Call us at 2652 155/Whatsapp 8282 212 or visit www.confex-mice.com/motoringbn/subscribe

At a later stage, it might be available to purchase at retail bookstores but there is no guarantee in the event stock runs out.

A run for the education of underprivileged children in Brunei was held yesterday at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, which was one of the biggest charity runs in Brunei this year. Charity runs in Brunei have had amazing responses and yesterday’s event saw more than 5,000 participants in BIBD’s fundraising event of the year, the Charity Expedition for Advocating Life-Long Learning for an Aspiring Future (CE-ALAF) programme.

The inaugural charity expedition aimed to provide opportunities for the participants to play a major part in helping underprivileged children to stay in school. Running and cycling enthusiasts of all ages came together for a single cause, raising money for charity.

The ALAF Programme, which was initiated by BIBD CSR, aimed to provide opportunities for educational progression to underprivileged students. The charity expedition, which carried the tagline "One Step, One Pedal, One Education" hoped to inspire people to perform good deeds for the community.

Starting and finishing at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, it began with a warm up session conducted by GetFitCrossFit before participants set off on their expedition.

Around 350 cyclists enjoyed their ride in the 53km cycling expedition led by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, as well as the Chairman of BIBD, an avid cyclist himself.

Participating and supporting the charity run were HRH Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah, HRH Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah and YAM Pengiran Muda Abdul Mu’min as well as Cabinet Ministers, deputy ministers, permanent secretaries and other senior officials from the government as well as private sectors.

The 21km half-marathon was flagged-off by guest of honour Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Education, also a key partner of the BIBD ALAF Programme.

The half-marathon run posed a serious challenge yesterday even to experienced runners. Also participating in the half-marathon was Haji Noorishanuddin bin Haji Noor Kaseh, a special needs individual who despite being wheelchair-bound was determined to complete the run.

Later, the second flag-off was held for the 10km runners as soon as the horn was sounded by Hjh Noraini binti Haji Sulaiman, BIBD’s Chief Financial Officer. The start of the 10km run saw 1,000 participants taking part and it served as an event to identify emerging talents that can be nurtured for the future.

As for the 5km and 2.5km Fun Run, Ak Hafiy Tajuddin Pg Rositi and Maziah Mahusin, Brunei’s young Olympians, were invited to flag-off the categories respectively. These categories saw 3,300 runners taking part.

Those who chose not to participate in the run also enjoyed the carnival with many stalls selling a wide variety of food and beverages as well as offering fun games and other entertainment.

The organisers of the event thanked the sponsors for making the event successful such as Fajr Capital, the event’s Platinum Sponsor; Silverlake and Syarikat Takaful Brunei Sdn Bhd, the Silver Sponsors; as well as RBA who sponsored tickets for the 21km winners to Melbourne, Hong Kong and Singapore.

MD Never Die

Buddies

Last weekend’s awesome picnic with old friends from my years in sixth form really brought back some good memories. It was also heart-warming to see our kids striking up friendships with each other. Brought to mind this poem about friendship by Welsh poet Joseph Parry:

Make new friends, but keep the old; Those are silver, these are gold.
New-made friendships, like new wine, Age will mellow and refine.
Friendships that have stood the test -Time and change – are surely best;
Brow may wrinkle, hair grow gray, Friendship never knows decay.
For ‘mid old friends, tried and true, Once more we our youth renew.
But old friends, alas! may die, New friends must their place supply.
Cherish friendship in your breast – New is good, but old is best;
Make new friends, but keep the old; Those are silver, these are gold.

The first edition of the ‘DuaMinggu’ newsletter publication was launched to the warm applause of business partners and sponsors at the Radisson Hotel yesterday.

The launch marked a new medium for cultural consulting firm iBudaya to reach out to its target audience including companies, public agencies, educational bodies, cultural institutions and artists centred towards advocating the cultural development seeing that there are bright prospects in the creative industries.

According to a press release issued by iBudaya, the main worries that tourists and even expatriates to a certain extent experience in Brunei is that they miss out on social and cultural events, not well informed in the first place and only discovering about it later once people talk about it or through radio or newspapers.

Communication tools such as Facebook is still accessible but tourists still lack awareness if they do not come across the right circle.

Sheikh Jamaluddin, Director of Tourism Development Department, told the audience that Brunei would witness a grand and spectacular Regatta event at the BSB Waterfront. “It will be the first time in 20 years since the Regatta was held in Brunei,” he said.

The guest of honour then proceeded to cut the ribbon and picked out a first newsletter publication much to the delight of the crowd. He then tied the first copy to a balloon and released it to the skies. Also present at the event were iBudaya CEO, Anais Maro and its Editorial Manager Cecilia Castilla.

‘DuaMinggu’ is free of charge and can be found at Bello Cafe, JIS and Fitness Zone starting today.

There will be no associated cost for such information to be released for publication in the newsletter. Any individuals or companies who wish to get such information published can contact Cecilia Castilla at [email protected] corn or 8632980. Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
