The design concept of this store is Regional Modern featuring lots of woodwork (Semangkok – Tropical hardwood from Malaysia), and the wooden planks of this store are actually made using recycled pallet wood (crate). The store has an overall square feet (sq ft) of 6,329 sq ft and can seat approximately 185 people, indoor and outdoor seating combine.

Starbucks opened its first store in Brunei on February 16, 2014 at one of the most popular shopping destinations in Brunei, Mabohai Shopping Complex located at Bandar Seri Begawan which is the center of Brunei’s commerce, finance and government. In many ways, it is also the heart of Brunei’s cultural landscape, housing some of the nation’s most revered landmarks. This Starbucks store has been designed to reflect Starbucks 43-year coffee heritage, while embracing the country’s distinctive local traditions and culture.

2014-09-07 14.19.32

Sydney Quays, Managing Director of Starbucks Malaysia and Brunei said: “In Brunei, we look forward to welcoming customers to our stores and engaging in single moments of connection over coffee. Starbucks locations are a community gathering place where people come together to connect over coffee and enjoy the Third Place experience. We look forward to offering the highest-quality arabica coffee, handcrafted beverages, locally relevant food, legendary service and the unique Starbucks Experience to customers in Brunei that is consistent with the quality and experience the Starbucks brand is known for and trusted by consumers across the globe.”

2014-09-07 14.22.31

Starbucks has built the brand by delivering a consistent, authentic in-store experience to customers around the globe. The Starbucks Experience is built on sourcing the highest quality arabica coffee, delivering high-quality product innovation and surprising and delighting customers with an uplifting experience through engaged, passionate and knowledgeable baristas. With 43-years of coffee heritage and expertise, Starbucks is the coffee leader globally and has built the brand on its passion and pursuit for the highest quality coffee.

2014-09-07 14.20.58

“Starbucks provides much more than just the best cup of coffee — we offer a community gathering place where people come together, connect with family and friends and celebrate the Bruneian local culture. Now with the opening of our drive-thru concept store, we hope customers will enjoy the convenience of coffee on the go.” says Sydney.

Brunei will be Starbucks 15th market in its China and Asia Pacific region and its 64th market globally.

Despite the sudden downpour, the capital was abuzz with excitement yesterday as thousands of people gathered to celebrate His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam‘s 67th birthday in the Brunei-Muara District.

The crowds stood unabated in a line, stretching from Taman Sir Muda Hj Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) to Lapau, when brief rainfall and gusty winds occurred following a colourful stage performance of music and dance.

His Majesty, joined by other members of the royal family, were unfazed by the weather as they mingled with the public during an ensuing meet-and-greet session at the event. For several hours, the monarch shook the hand of every man, woman, elder and child.

His Majesty arrived in the morning to a cheerful assembly of school children waving the national flag and the glittering bunga manggar.

The monarch was accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince Haji ‘Abdul ‘Azim, His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah and His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah.

Three loud cheers of “Daulat Kebawah Duli Tuan Patik” (Long Live His Majesty) after the national anthem marked the start of the auspicious occasion.

Brunei-Muara District Officer Hj Jamain Momin, then delivered a welcoming speech, expressing gratitude for the presence of His Majesty and members of the royal family at the annual event.

As overcast began to loom, the celebration continued with the Borneo Cup Tug-of-War final and Brunei-Muara district’s special performance.

His Majesty presented trophies and prizes to the Borneo Cup Tug-of-War teams with Brunei coming in first place, followed by runner-ups Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak. Before retiring for a santap (banquet), the Monarch and Royal Family met the public.

Various gifts of all shapes and sizes were presented to His Majesty during the meet-and-greet session, including a number of grand cakes and framed pictures.

His Majesty’s 67th birthday celebration this year was postponed from July to observe the month of Ramadhan.

A run for the education of underprivileged children in Brunei was held yesterday at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, which was one of the biggest charity runs in Brunei this year. Charity runs in Brunei have had amazing responses and yesterday’s event saw more than 5,000 participants in BIBD’s fundraising event of the year, the Charity Expedition for Advocating Life-Long Learning for an Aspiring Future (CE-ALAF) programme.

The inaugural charity expedition aimed to provide opportunities for the participants to play a major part in helping underprivileged children to stay in school. Running and cycling enthusiasts of all ages came together for a single cause, raising money for charity.

The ALAF Programme, which was initiated by BIBD CSR, aimed to provide opportunities for educational progression to underprivileged students. The charity expedition, which carried the tagline "One Step, One Pedal, One Education" hoped to inspire people to perform good deeds for the community.

Starting and finishing at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, it began with a warm up session conducted by GetFitCrossFit before participants set off on their expedition.

Around 350 cyclists enjoyed their ride in the 53km cycling expedition led by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, as well as the Chairman of BIBD, an avid cyclist himself.

Participating and supporting the charity run were HRH Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah, HRH Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah and YAM Pengiran Muda Abdul Mu’min as well as Cabinet Ministers, deputy ministers, permanent secretaries and other senior officials from the government as well as private sectors.

The 21km half-marathon was flagged-off by guest of honour Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Education, also a key partner of the BIBD ALAF Programme.

The half-marathon run posed a serious challenge yesterday even to experienced runners. Also participating in the half-marathon was Haji Noorishanuddin bin Haji Noor Kaseh, a special needs individual who despite being wheelchair-bound was determined to complete the run.

Later, the second flag-off was held for the 10km runners as soon as the horn was sounded by Hjh Noraini binti Haji Sulaiman, BIBD’s Chief Financial Officer. The start of the 10km run saw 1,000 participants taking part and it served as an event to identify emerging talents that can be nurtured for the future.

As for the 5km and 2.5km Fun Run, Ak Hafiy Tajuddin Pg Rositi and Maziah Mahusin, Brunei’s young Olympians, were invited to flag-off the categories respectively. These categories saw 3,300 runners taking part.

Those who chose not to participate in the run also enjoyed the carnival with many stalls selling a wide variety of food and beverages as well as offering fun games and other entertainment.

The event also saw more than 200 lucky draw prizes given away to the participants.

Prizes to the winners of the 10km and 21km run were handed by Pehin Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya.

The Charity Expedition for ALAF was jointly organised in partnership with the Ministry of Education, DSignku Enterprise, Brunei Press Sdn Bhd, AdXpert Marketing, Orchid Garden Hotel, Cityneon Brunei, Ezy Printing, Pusat Ehsan, Aewon Brunei and GetFitCrossFit.

The organisers of the event thanked the sponsors for making the event successful such as Fajr Capital, the event’s Platinum Sponsor; Silverlake and Syarikat Takaful Brunei Sdn Bhd, the Silver Sponsors; as well as RBA who sponsored tickets for the 21km winners to Melbourne, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Around 500 personnel from the Royal Brunei Police Force, RIPAS, JPMC, HEART, KatakIjau, management and staff of BIBD volunteered to ensure that the event ran smoothly.

For the  last few years, I’ve been attending the National Day celebrations as part of the growing media contingent. Being assigned to various zones at the Taman SOAS meant that I could photograph the event from different perspectives. This year however, instead of being part of the media, I decided to be one of the participants instead and try to capture the essence of what that is like.

Despite recovering from a bout of food-poisoning, I headed to town yesterday morning to attend the National Day practice sessions. It was perfect weather, overcast with a slight drizzle. There must have been at least 15,000 people participating in the various activities like march past, field presentations etc. The spirit of National Day was definitely visible and I felt proud to be Bruneian! Can’t wait for tomorrow! If you’re coming down as well, see ya!!

The first youth-led leadership forum, targeting Brunei’s Next generation – Convergence, took place at the BMW Showroom in Beribi Industrial Area last night, attended by over 100 invited guests ranging from students, fresh-graduates, entrepreneurs, visionary executives, innovators and members from the Local creative industry.

The forum, the first of its kind to be held here, aimed to “inspire, challenge and motivate” its participants with a dinner dialogue led by three influential individuals, the Special Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, Nor Ali Yusop; Former Deputy Minister of Industry and Resources who is now a local entrepreneur with interests across a number of industries, Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah Hj Abd Wahab; and Chief Executive Officer and Head of Consumer Banking for Standard Chartered Bank Brunei, Lai Pei-Si.

The theme of the Convergence Forum – ‘From Success to Significance’, saw the three panellists speak on various topics including a topic worth to ponder upon – ‘Stepping out of your comfort zone: What have you got to lose?’. The panellists each had a story to share regarding the risks they have taken either personally or professionally to show participants that there are some risks worth taking.

Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah during the forum shared his story from his early beginnings of his career, until his windfall of holding various high-ranking posts in multi-disciplinary areas both in the private sector and the government. He was the Managing Director for Brunei Shell, and his last Government Post was as a Deputy Minister and now, he thrives as a local entrepreneur. He shared many interesting insights and views about his life within his career span, and on how he had to overcome and endure challenges during the course and how it has made him who he is today.

Lai Pei-Si, on the other hand, had also had a few interesting stories to share. Being in the banking industry for more than 10 years and having to move to Brunei from Singapore just early this year with her family, participants were curious on how the successful mother can balance her work, life and family.

Nor Ali, who lost his vision a number of years ago also shared an inspiring story of how a visually impaired person can contribute to the society and also succeed. He also shared on the challenges he had to overcome after being diagnosed as visually impaired and how he adapted to it until today.

The floor was also open to all participants to ask questions at the end of the forum.

Hosted by the people behind, ProjekBrunei.com with Delwin Keasberry in his capacity as the organiser of Convergence, the event last night proved to be a very valuable experience for all the participants.
